Free Bird” Originally recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd

There is simply no more anthemic song in pop culture than Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” It has been hailed as “the most-requested song in the history of rock music” by Amazon.com. "Free Bird" is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, and is No. 191 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2009 it was named the 26th best hard rock song of all time by VH1 and has been a staple of the Guitar Hero game series. Beyond a superb slice of Southern Rock, it is a cultural cliche, shouted out by audiences at countless performances of all genres worldwide. Could the band have imagined the staying power and iconic value of their now-signature piece, which has its humble origins in a roadie’s noodling piano lick at a high school prom? Probably not, but it is a fixture of their concerts now, invariably played as the finale at every show. An epic song in the annals of rock, “Free Bird” features an equally epic-length triple guitar solo in the charging climax of the song and trademark slide-guitar touches throughout. More than a classic, it has remained a perennial crowd pleaser for more than four decades and is still going strong.
